Check out our top 4th of July memes! With over three-quarters of Americans celebrating the 4th of July and billions spent on holiday-related purchases, the 4th of July is a major opportunity for marketers.

Whether it’s through email marketing, social media, or any other marketing channel, the challenge many marketers face is connecting with their audiences.

And what’s one easy way to make your marketing campaigns instantly resonate with millions of Americans? By including some great memes.

That’s why we’ve curated our top picks for the best 4th of July memes that you could possibly work into your marketing.

4th of July memes

Freedom rings

freedom rings meme

Freedom Eagle is perhaps the most popular 4th of July meme.

While this ‘freedom rings’ version is a good generic one you could incorporate into your marketing, you can also easily customize the text to say whatever you want.

If you could work your product or service into something about freedom, you’ll have a great meme to use in your campaigns.

Will Smith – Independence Day

will smith 4th of july meme

Another one of the most popular 4th of July memes is the one of Will Smith from Independence Day.

This is obviously a funny meme that isn’t supposed to be taken seriously and instead taps into American movie culture.

This makes it a great option if you want to go with something light-hearted and funny, but isn’t one you can really customize with your own text.

Happy birthday to those born on the fourth of July

happy birthday to those born on the fourth meme

If you were born in the United States on the 4th of July, you can be forgiven for thinking that the entire country was celebrating your birthday.

Even if you weren’t born on Independence Day, it’s worth remembering that some of your audience will be celebrating their birthdays on the fourth.

If you want to target these people in your marketing, then this meme with Leonardo DiCaprio is one you have to include.

Brace yourselves

brace yourselves independence day meme

Whether it’s New Year’s or 4th of July fireworks, people love taking videos of fireworks displays with their phones. This then results in the inevitable flurry of uploads on social media.

While this is a meme that most of your audience will likely be able to relate to, it’s a perfect choice if you sell high-quality video cameras or offer video editing software.

Terrible boom nightmare day for pets

4th of july meme

Speaking of fireworks, they also make Independence Day one of the worst days of the year for pets, especially dogs.

Not only does that make this meme one that pet owners can instantly relate to, if you sell pet food, toys, or accessories, it’s a prime candidate for your marketing.

Even if it’s just an educational email or social post reminding people to take care of their pets when fireworks are going off.

I didn’t say it, I declared it

michael scott I didn't say it I declared it meme

Why just announce your 4th of July sale when you can declare it?

Obviously relating to Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence, this meme featuring Michael Scott from The Office is another popular one that gets shared on the 4th of July.

And you can use the meme to declare anything you want to declare.

I can’t hear you over my freedom

I can't hear you over my freedom meme

This is another popular Freedom Eagle meme that makes the round at this time of year.

Again, the background is so iconic, you can easily change the wording to whatever you want and it will still scream American pride to your audience.

Fire works on the 4th of July

fire works on the 4th of july meme

This 4th of July meme is an excellent and funny example of a play on words.

You could easily use this meme to remind your audience of all the people who have to work on the 4th of July, or even just to highlight the fact you’ll be open on the holiday.

The colonies are quite rowdy today

the colonies are quite rowdy today meme

A 4th of July meme from a different (British) perspective.

This one is a funny take on the party nature of 4th of July celebrations and uses a stern image of the Queen of England as a juxtaposition.

Unlike other memes on this list, you can’t really change the wording of this meme otherwise people likely won’t recognize it as a 4th of July meme.

Grill all the things

BBQs and food are obviously big parts of 4th of July celebrations, so it’s not surprising there are plenty of memes associated with food.

If you sell food or BBQs, these memes make for great potential additions to your marketing campaigns.

Check out these 4th of July marketing ideas below! With the average American spending up to $75 on 4th of July sales, the holiday is a major sales opportunity for merchants.

And it’s not just those selling hot dogs, beer, fireworks, or other typical holiday purchases who can benefit either.

Only approximately a quarter of the money spent on 4th of July sales goes to these stereotypically patriotic purchases. This presents a great opportunity to make extra sales regardless of what you sell.

To help you make the most of this opportunity, we’ve put together this list of our top 10 4th of July marketing ideas that will boost your sales.

Marketing ideas for the 4th of July

1) Run a 4th of July sale

Holding a holiday-themed sale or promotion is the most popular way businesses celebrate Independence Day.

And while that might make it seem like the lazy choice, don’t forget that the reason holiday sales and promotions are so popular is because they’re incredibly effective.

Especially when so many other businesses are running sales and discounting their products. If you’re not doing the same, then you’ll lose customers to those who are.

It doesn’t have to be a massive sale either. A simple one-day sale will encourage your customers to act quickly to take advantage of your deals.

2) Email marketing

Whether you hold a sale or not, you need a way of getting customers to your store. The best way to do this is with email marketing.

Email marketing is the most effective marketing channel when it comes to communicating with your customers and getting them to make sales.

If you are running a sale, you’ll want to send an email marketing campaign letting potential customers know about your offers.

And if you decide not to hold a sale, you can still send your customers a Fourth of July email to celebrate and show your American pride. Just make sure you give it a good subject line so people open it.

For inspiration, check out our collection of the best 4th of July emails here.

3) Participate in local events

4th of july event

Wherever you are in America, there are sure to be plenty of local celebrations and events happening on the 4th of July.

Parades, fairs, and fireworks displays are all great opportunities to make an appearance and promote your business.

Your participation in these events doesn’t have to be strictly related to your business either. Simply handing out popcorn, candy or flags will do a great job of building your brand in the minds of potential customers.

If you do decide to participate in any events, be sure to take plenty of pictures that you can use later in your email campaigns and on social media.

4) Social media

Speaking of social media, you definitely want to connect with your audience on social media as well.

You can do this by posting about your 4th of July sale (if you’re holding one), any events you’re participating in, or just simply celebrate Independence Day.

To maximize the exposure of your posts, be sure to use holiday hashtags so that potential customers will be more likely to see them. Some examples of popular hashtags include: #4thofJuly, #IndependenceDay, #America, #fireworks, etc.

If you’re looking for content to post, 4th of July memes and quotes make for quick and easy posts.

5) Hand out freebies

A great way to engage with your customers is to hand out some free 4th of July swag.

This can work particularly well if your business is participating in a local event. But you can still hand out free stuff in your own store.

As for what you hand out, you have two main options: 4th of July themed swag like stickers, temporary tattoos, flags, streamers, etc., or product samples that can entice people to buy your products.

Pro tip: Consider collecting people’s email addresses in exchange for the swag.

Most people will be happy to sign up for your email list if the swag is good enough and this lets you contact them later to convert them into customers.

6) SMS marketing

When it comes to contacting customers, few channels will get their attention and reliably and quickly as SMS.

Because SMS is more personal and intimate than email or social media, it’s best to use a very light touch, however.

This is why you should only send one SMS on the 4th of July and only if you have something to say that they’ll be interested in. Don’t just send a ‘Happy Independence Day’ message if you’re not going to back it up with a decent sale offer.

Sign-up to our newsletter and receive a free Calendar with all the most important key eCommerce dates that you shouldn’t miss in 2024

7) Create a 4th of July themed popup

Popups are something you should be running on your online store all the time.

But instead of running the same generic popup all year, you can keep it interesting by customizing it for upcoming holidays like the 4th of July.

This will let you highlight any sale or promotion you’re running to website visitors which will increase the number of customers you’ll convert.

For popup design inspiration, check out our collection of great popup examples or read our popup design best practices guide.

8) User-generated content

Wouldn’t it be great if you could get your audience to generate your marketing content themselves largely for free? Well user-generated content lets you do just that.

User-generated content is simply content that your audience creates themselves that you can then use in your marketing efforts.

A typical example would be getting people to post photos to social media with your own branded hashtag. You can then use these posts later on in your marketing as a form of social proof.

The 4th of July leads itself well to this kind of marketing strategy too.

You could easily run a promotion where you get people to share a 4th of July selfie with your hashtag to go into the running to win a prize.

9) Showcase your red, white and blue products

Red, white, and blue are obviously big 4th of July colors, so you should incorporate them into your marketing as well.

One easy way to do this is to simply create a collection of red, white, and blue products like Cook’s Illustrated has done with their cooking gadgets.

red white blue product collection

10) Run a contest

Running a contest is a great way to build engagement with your audience and reach new customers. And there are plenty of options when it comes to what kind of contest you want to run as well.

You could hold a photo competition like we mentioned under user-generated content, get people to write a few sentences about what America means to them, or run a simple quiz.

Of course, you’ll want to offer an enticing reward for those who win your contest so that people participate. Gleam.io is a great app that can help with running competitions.

Free migration offer

The bottom line

Hopefully, now you have plenty of 4th of July marketing ideas to consider.

Obviously, you don’t want to spread yourself too thin and try to execute every marketing idea you have. Instead, you want to think about which ones are most relevant for your store and which ones will generate the most sales for you.

Below are some of the best examples of 4th of July email campaigns. Enjoying fireworks, having family and friends over for a barbecue, or simply staying at home and watching the parade, there are a lot of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July.

And it turns out that there’s another pastime that’s as American as apple pie that’s increasingly becoming a holiday tradition: shopping.

With the average American looking at spending $73 on holiday-related purchases for a combined total of nearly $7 billion nationally, business owners have another reason to love Independence Day.

But in order to maximize your 4th of July sales, you’ll need to take full advantage of email marketing.

Not only is email marketing the most profitable marketing channel there is, but July 4th emails have been found to bring in a third more sales than standard marketing emails.

So to help you compose your own email campaigns, we’ve curated this list of the 10 best Fourth of July examples we’ve seen.

4th of July email examples

Patriotic Independence Day email

email campaign example

Fourth of July emails don’t get much more patriotic than this.

Red, white, and blue color scheme, “Stand Proud” title, and a limited edition product called “The 1776” all make it obvious that holiday this email is for.

This is a great starting point if you’re looking for a typical Independence Day email to get inspiration from.

Animated GIF

animated gif email example

One of the best ways to make your email campaign stand out in people’s inboxes is to bring it to life with animated GIFs.

While Rover is an online marketplace for pet services, the use of a hotdog keeps the email holiday-themed and is a clever use of the American slang “hotdog!”

The simplicity of showing the hotdog being eaten also keeps the animation from being over-the-top. When it comes to animated emails, less is definitely more.

While you might want to show off your animation skills, anything overly complicated risks ruining the experience and resulting in a large file size which can cause problems when people open your email.

Old Glory

independence day email design

A lot of marketers will make their emails holiday-themed by incorporating an American flag into the design.

However, while many will go for the easy option of simply inserting a royalty-free image of Old Glory, Alviero Martini has put a bit more effort into their design.

They have used red, white, and blue variants of their Geo Raffia backpack to create a stylized flag.

This keeps the email sophisticated and simple, true to their brand, while also making it obvious this is a holiday sale email.

Subtle stars and stripes

holiday email example

If you’re looking for a more subtle way to reference the holiday, you can try incorporating any holiday-themed products you have like Old Navy has done.

By simply featuring a red and white striped woman’s dress along with a girl’s blue dress with stars, it becomes obvious what occasion this sale is celebrating. This is without the email becoming too promotional or over-the-top in referencing the holiday.

4th of July sale announcement

sale email

Your Independence Day email campaign shouldn’t be limited to just one email.

Ideally, your email campaign should consist of a series of emails with the first one announcing your sale sent a week or two in advance.

This is exactly what Helix has done with their 4th of July campaign.

By announcing your sale early, you’ll increase your chances of getting people’s attention instead of having to compete with the barrage of emails people will be receiving on the holiday itself.

Of course, you should still send an email on the 4th as well.

Final countdown

countdown / sense of urgency example

After you’ve sent your announcement, it’s important to follow up with emails reminding your subscribers of your sale.

If your sale is only lasting for the long weekend, then you can get away with sending an email every day.

If you’ve stretched your sale out over a long period, like in the week leading up to Independence Day or even the whole month of July, then space your reminder emails out more sparingly.

Regardless of however long your sale lasts for, as it draws to a close, you’ll want to send a ‘last chance’ email out as Hot Topic has done.

By including a countdown timer in the email header, Hot Topic has increased the sense of urgency (the goal of ‘last chance’ or ‘final reminder’ emails). This will help compel more people into making a purchase so they don’t miss out on their discount.

The use of fireworks ready to take off is also a new visual way to link the end of sale countdown to the 4th of July without explicitly mentioning the holiday.

Free shipping

free shipping example email

One of the biggest hurdles to making sales for ecommerce merchants is shipping costs.

Few things cause would-be customers to abandon their online carts more than seeing high shipping costs at checkout.

This makes free shipping offers so powerful.

And while it might not be feasible to offer free shipping all the time, if you’re trying to think of an attractive offer for your 4th of July sale, then free shipping for a limited time might be the perfect choice.

If you do decide to go with a free shipping offer, be sure to display it prominently as Kusmi Tea has done in their email.

Install SmartrMail Banner

Simply celebrate the holiday

celebrate the holiday example email

Not every email you send has to be about making a sale.

Most of the time, a genuine July Fourth message will do more good for your brand in the longterm than any sale will.

Even if you’re holding a 4th of July sale, you might want to consider sending one holiday email that isn’t trying to directly push a sale as a part of your campaign.

And if for whatever reason you’re not holding a sale this July, you can still send this type of email to your subscribers to maintain your relationship with them.

Sophisticated 4th of July email design

example of sophisticated email design

If you’re put off by all of the bright red, white, and blue, fireworks, stars, etc. in most of the 4th of July email designs, then fear not: The Dreslyn’s email is a good example of high-end design.

As The Dreslyn sells luxury homewares, the abstract watercolor painting with minimal use of blue and red is a helps tie the email to the holiday while remaining on-brand.

This shows that no matter how prestigious your brand is, you can still get involved with 4th of July emails.

The only potential issue with this particular email design is the call-to-action at the top to “Shop Now” is so small that it is easy to miss entirely.

Whenever you add a call-to-action (which you should in every email you send) it should be obvious so that subscribers are naturally drawn to click on it.

Provide your subscribers with extra value

providing extra value for the holiday

Brooklinen’s email suggests online shopping as a way to prevent a “Weekday Holiday Hangover” in a lighthearted manner.

Further down the email, they provide some more serious suggestions for taking it easy while celebrating the holiday.

While you don’t have to provide your subscribers with similar pointers, it’s worthwhile considering how you can provide extra value to your audience.

For instance, if you’re running a hardware store, you might want to provide a few guides to projects people can do over the long weekend.

Or if you run a grocery store or butchers, you might want to suggest some cooking tips or recipes that go well with barbecues.

Instead of simply wishing your customers a happy July Fourth and trying to sell some merchandise in the process, adding extra value to your emails will strengthen relationships with your brand and when done well, will help you sell more products as well!

The rest of your Independence Day campaign

Now that you have plenty of ideas for your own campaign strategy and design inspiration, it’s time to think about the other parts of your emails.

In particular, your email subject lines.

It doesn’t matter how great your email design is or how tempting the offer inside is if people aren’t opening your emails.

And in order to improve your open rates, you need to turn your attention to your subject lines.

After all, a third of your email list base their decision on whether or not to open your email entirely on its subject line

Thankfully, if coming up with good subject lines is a challenge, or if you’re just looking for some inspiration, we have a list of 4th of July subject lines that you can check out.

Barbecues, fireworks and hot dogs: there’s lots to love about the 4th of July. While Independence Day is a celebration for all Americans, it also presents a unique opportunity for small business owners.

Last year the average American consumer planned to spend $75 in the lead up to the fourth of July. And only a quarter of these sales were on patriotic purchases to showcase shoppers’ American pride. This leaves a large part of the pie for all businesses to grab a slice of regardless of what they sell.

In order to maximize your sales during holiday, you’ll need to utilize email marketing. Not only is it the most profitable digital marketing channel, but it’s also one of the best ways to keep in touch with your customers.

To make sure that your emails stand out in your subscribers’ inboxes, and that people will open them, you’ll need some great subject lines. This is particularly important as 35% of people base their decision whether or not to open an email solely on its subject line.

So to give you and your store the best chance at making sales this 4th of July, we’ve curated this list of 44 subject lines. Feel free to use them yourself or as inspiration when coming up with your own.
